Nautilus Data Technologies was founded in 2013 by Arnold Magcale, a recognized technology industry expert with decades of experience in data centers and cloud management. Mr. Magcale is also a U.S. Navy Special Forces veteran and a certified dive master, who combined his maritime expertise and military security knowledge with decades of technology experience to create the Nautilus waterborne data center design. The company is headquartered in Pleasanton, California.

Next Generation Data Center

The first commercial Nautilus data center is currently under construction at California’s Mare Island Shipyard, where Nautilus successfully validated its first proof-of-concept prototype data center in 2015. The proof-of-concept process included a certified third party pre-commissioning and was validated by the engineering firms Jacobs Engineering and Critical Engineering Group.

Named “Eli M,” the innovative data center is being constructed on an ocean-worthy barge that meets all Coast Guard certifications and exceeds international maritime standards.

Nautilus’ cloud solution automates the infrastructure in an open source environment agnostic to any data center, cloud or application. Additionally, Nautilus’ DCIM solution is predictive with integrated artificial intelligence that self heals and provides military-grade security.

The Nautilus facility provides a high-density computing data center environment that can operate up to 800 server racks, which may be deployed in less than six months anywhere around the world that has a body of water.

With a potential 50% annual energy savings, the Nautilus design can save companies up to $4 Million a year in energy costs. All of this is supported with our patent-pending technology specific to the Data Center Vessel, Modularity, Cooling System and Thermal Containment, Intelligent Power Management and DCIM with Predictive Analytics.

Why Water?

Traditional data centers use massive amounts of water to cool the facilities, wasting a precious natural resource at an alarming rate. One average size data center can consume enough water to supply 2,000 homes a year.

That conventional model is unsustainable.

Nautilus’ patent-pending cooling technology is a revolutionary advancement, offering an innovative system that consumes NO water. By placing data centers on certified barges, Nautilus leverages the natural water below to cool the data centers, and all the water is recirculated safely back into the original body of water. The result is a next generation facility that operates less expensively and more efficiently than land-based centers, while still achieving the highest environmental standards.


James Connaughton

James L. Connaughton is one of America’s most distinguished energy and environmental experts, as both corporate leader and prominent White House policymaker. He has creatively developed market-based solutions to some of the world’s most significant environmental challenges – deploying innovative technology to help protect the environment for future generations.

Most recently Mr. Connaughton, served as Executive Vice President of C3 Energy, enabling energy companies to realize the full benefit of their IoT and system investments by applying the power of big data, advanced analytics, social networking, machine learning, and cloud computing to improve the safety, reliability, and efficiency of power generation and delivery – making the ‘Internet of Energy’ a reality.

Previously, Mr. Connaughton was Executive Vice President and Senior Policy Advisor at Exelon and Constellation Energy (which merged with Exelon). There he served on each company’s Executive Committee with responsibility for major public policy priorities, federal and state energy market regulation, public sector business development, corporate sustainability, technology innovation initiatives and certain venture investments.

In 2001, Mr. Connaughton was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve as Chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality. From 2001-2009 he served as President Bush’s senior advisor on energy, environment and natural resources, and as Director of the White House Office of Environmental Policy. During his service with the federal government, Connaughton worked closely with the President, the Cabinet and the Congress to develop and implement energy, environment, natural resource, and climate change policies. This work led to a series of new market-based programs, incentives, technology initiatives and public-private partnerships that included bipartisan energy legislation, nearly $90 billion for clean energy technology research and incentives to accelerate commercial deployment of advanced technologies such as plug-in hybrid vehicles, renewable fuels, nuclear, solar and wind.

Mr. Connaughton also played a leading role in major initiatives that expanded energy and infrastructure projects, improved management of public forests, protected and restored millions of acres of wetlands, implemented new national air quality standards, reduced air pollution from power plants and diesel vehicles, improved conservation partnerships with farmers, and developed international environmental cooperation agreements.

Mr. Connaughton is a passionate ocean resource conservationist, and helped establish some of the largest and most ecologically diverse marine sanctuaries in the world. In 2013, Oceana honored his service with their “Ocean Champion” award.

Mr. Connaughton is an Advisor to Shine Medical Technologies and to the ClearPath Foundation. He is on the Board of Governors of the Argonne National Laboratory, the Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board Task Force on Federal Energy Management, and the United States National Commission to the United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). He is a Founding Member of the United States Conservation Leadership Council, a Trustee (Emeritus) of the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, and is a member of the Climate Change Study Group of the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Connaughton received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and graduated magna cum laude from Northwestern University School of Law.

Arnold Magcale

Arnold Magcale is a recognized leader and respected visionary in the technology industry, specializing in data center infrastructure, high-availability networks, cloud design and Software as a Service (SaaS) Technology.

Mr. Magcale is also a noted pioneer of the data center field. While serving on the management team of Exodus Communications, he helped launch one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s first data centers, and continues to lead the industry today with his transformational data center innovations at Nautilus Data Technologies.

His background includes senior management positions at Motorola Mobility, where his team deployed the first global Droid devices, and he held executive level positions at LinkSource Technologies and The Quantum Capital Fund, serving as Chief Technology Officer. He was also an early adopter and implementer of Cloud Computing and a member of the team at Danger, Inc., when it was acquired by Microsoft.

Additionally, Mr. Magcale had a unique and distinguished career in the United States Navy Special Forces. His military and maritime expertise – combined with his technology skills and ingenuity – helped him design the world’s first commercial waterborne data center.

Mr. Magcale is a certified dive master and holder of several technology patents. He studied at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, where he received a B.A. in Computer Science.

Kirk Horton

Mr. Horton is a widely known and well-regarded leader in the data center industry with 20 years of experience heading global sales and channel organizations. He has an extensive background in the data center, cloud services and managed services industries and has successfully helped guide multiple companies to unprecedented performance and profits.

Most recently, Mr. Horton served as Vice President of Channel Sales for IPR International, a leading provider of cloud and colocation services. Prior to IPR, Horton was Vice President of Enterprise Sales and Channels for Telx, a leading provider of interconnection and data center services in the U.S, and was instrumental to the company’s unparalleled revenue growth. Horton was also part of the Telx management team that led the company to a highly successful private equity sale in 2011, before Telx was later purchased by Digital Realty Trust. Prior to Telx, Horton served in executive sales and channel roles at leading data center and technology companies Globix (now QTS Realty Trust), Digital Island, and SpeedERA (Akamai) and was a key member of the management team that led those companies to remarkably successful exits.

Mr. Horton was named as a Top Channel Chief by CRN five times for leading program innovation and generating revenue. He also received the distinguished Circle of Excellence Award for leadership and innovation. He’s a past member and advisory board member of the Technology Channel Association (TCA) – the industry’s first non-profit trade association – and a coveted speaker at industry events. Mr. Horton attended California Polytechnic State University, SLO and has a BS Degree in Int’l Business Administration/Management from Notre Dame deNamur University.

Chad Romine

Chad Romine has two decades of experience in technical and strategic business development. With strong ties to some of the most prominent figures in Silicon Valley, Chad has led startups and under-performing companies to successful maturity – built largely upon solid partnerships. Proven results in negotiating mutually beneficial strategic alliances and joint ventures – often between unlikely partners – that’s Chad’s calling card. Outside of work, Chad has invested time fundraising for the American Cancer Society. Recently he helped develop a major new educational program for a private University. Chad is married to his wife Casie and they have two sons, Cole and Colin.

Daniel Kekai

Daniel Kekai brings 20 plus years of experience in data center infrastructure architecture, cloud services architecture and highly available global networks. Starting at Exodus Communications, he was part of the early team that built out the first data centers in Silicone Valley. Mr. Kekai was also part of the early team at Danger Inc., where he helped to build one of the earliest adoptions of cloud services for mobile devices prior to the company being acquired by Microsoft. He has also held senior data center architect and cloud services architect positions at Motorola where he helped to design and deploy global Droid services and at Quantum Capital Fund where he served as cloud services architect. Mr. Kekai is also named on several data center technology patents.

Byron Taylor

Mr. Taylor has 25 years of experience providing mission critical infrastructure design, project management and manufacturing for Fortune 500 companies. His expertise spans a variety of areas of engineering design and operations, including data centers (modular and fixed locations), N+N power generation & co-generation platforms of systems up to 10 MW, hardened high security facilities, class 1 – 100,000 clean rooms, chemical and biological hazard controlled areas, utility scale water treatment equipment, custom Search and Rescue vessels and energy storage platforms. At Nautilus, he is leading the effort in design and mission critical operations for the waterborne data facilities.


Greg Jamison

Prior to taking the helm as President & CEO of Nautilus Data Technologies, Greg Jamison served as president and chief executive officer of Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment and San Jose Sharks. During his tenure, Jamison oversaw the transformation of the San Jose Sharks into one of the NHL’s most respected and successful franchises. Jamison was an active participant in the endeavors of several community organizations, including serving as past president of the Board of Ballet San Jose, past chairman of the San Jose Convention and Visitors Bureau, past chairman of the San Jose Sports Authority Board. He is currently involved in several other boards including Wayin and Monterey Peninsula Foundation. He arrived in San Jose after notable stints with the Indiana Pacers and the Dallas Mavericks.

Jay Kerley

Jay Kerley joined Applied Materials, Inc. in 2006 and has been chief information officer (CIO) since 2011. He was promoted to group vice president in July 2013 and is responsible for providing a longterm technology vision that supports the company’s strategies and operating requirements. He leads the Global Information Services (GIS) organization to enable worldwide business solutions and infrastructure that support the company’s market needs. Additionally, he is an external advocate of GIS and promotes awareness of end-user technology trends that link to Applied‘s strategic capabilities.

Mr. Kerley has more than 20 years of industry experience across business verticals including pharmaceutical R&D, global logistics and high-tech, leading IT transformation and globalization. Under his executive leadership, he and his teams have been recognized for IT leadership in Computerworld’s “100 Best Places to Work in IT” (five years running) and “Premier 100 IT Leaders,”the “InformationWeek 500” and CIO’s “100 Business Technology Leaders.”

Scott McNealy

Scott McNealy, Co-Founded Sun Microsystems in 1982 and served as CEO and Chairman of the Board for 22 years during which he piloted the company from startup to legendary Silicon Valley giant in computing infrastructure, network computing, and open source software. Under his watch, Sun Microsystems employed approximately 235,000 worldwide. Sun was sold to Oracle in 2010 for $7.4 billion. In 2004, McNealy co-founded Curriki (curriculum + wiki), formerly the Global Education and Learning Community (GELC), Staying true to his Sun innovation roots, McNealy took a core group of Sun Microsystems alumni and founded Wayin in 2011, where he serves as Chairman of the Board.

Scott McNealy is an enthusiastic ice hockey fan and board member of the San Jose Sharks Sports and Entertainment organization. He is also an avid golfer with a single digit handicap. McNealy holds a BA in Economics from Harvard University and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

McNealy is committed to innovation in technology and education and is an outspoken advocate for personal liberty and responsibility, small government, and free-market competition. He is heavily involved in advisory roles for companies that range from startup stage to large corporations. McNealy believes in the philosophy that “Without choice, you have no innovation. Without innovation, you have nothing.”

Jim Jensen

Jim Jensen, a partner in the firm’s Emerging Companies & Venture Capital practice and a leader of the firm’s China Emerging Company and the Investment Fund Formation practices in Silicon Valley, represents emerging companies, accelerator/incubators and venture capital funds in diverse industries, including clean technology (e.g., biofuels, LEDs, smart meters and solar), digital media, Internet, medical devices, mobile, security and software. He is a technology entrepreneur and has formed and ran multiple e-commerce and other Internet companies, which gives him a unique understanding of legal issues as viewed through the eyes of entrepreneurs. He also represents traditional brick and mortar businesses that produce profits and cash flow, anathemas to Silicon Valley startup companies.

Peter F. Nassab

Peter is President of NGV Group LLC, an organization committed to improving operating costs and de-risking investments through an acute focus on strategy, optimized supply chain performance, project execution, and counterparty engagement.

An international business executive with 30 years of experience in the defense electronics, energy, and infrastructure industries, Peter has held leadership positions in operating companies, service providers, and consulting businesses, including Raytheon, Enron, and ConocoPhillips. His expertise in complex contracting, global business development, and supply chain operations enables him to provide value-oriented solutions to growth and operating challenges.

A passionate advocate for corporate social responsibility and international affairs, Peter serves on the Board of the World Affairs Council of Greater Houston.
